Car Rental at Narita Airport (Tokyo/Chiba)

Narita Airport is Japan’s busiest airport, handling over half of all incoming international passengers. Though many airlines have moved to Haneda airport, Narita has become the main hub for LCC’s (Low-cost carriers). This is great news for people located in neighboring Asian countries, as they are able to fly to Japan at very low rates.

Although many people call it Tokyo Narita Airport, Narita Airport is actually not located in Tokyo at all. It is located in the neighboring Chiba prefecture (similar to Tokyo Disney, which is also located in Chiba). Narita Airport is actually a lot further from Tokyo than most people would expect. Even by train, it might take you about an hour to get to Tokyo Station.

Since Narita is far from the larger cities (Tokyo/Yokohama), it has great access to many of the major highways (many roads lead to Narita). This is great for travelers who are trying to avoid the main Tokyo area and drive to other destinations.

The Narita Airport shop is a great starting point for those looking to drive to Nagano (Karuizawa, Hakuba Ski Resort), Gunma (Kusatsu Hotsprings), Hakone (Hakone Hotsprings), Shizuoka (Mt. Fuji) and many many more exciting sightseeing spots and attractions.

The weather conditions around Narita Airport are typically pretty dry, with the exception of “Tsuyu” or rainy season. Tsuyu usually occurs from the beginning of June and continues until the end of July. In most cases, snow tires will not be required. They are recommended though, to those who will be driving in the mountains during the winter season.
